..... tot onser alder harte leetwesen de fluijt de Smient nochte het schoone Jacht de Sperwer daer [Japan] niet is comen te verschijnen 't welck bij ons op den 29^en Julij laestleden naer Jappan afgevaerdicht was met een cargasoentie van f 388819: 14: 15 dat seecker voor de Comp^e te [twee?] groote slaagen zijn voornamelijck t missen van soo veel trouwe dienaren ende twee soo costelijcke schepen..... Wat ongeval de Sperwer mach zijn bejegent en connen niet bevroeden; oock en hebben daar van de minste tijdinge niet becomen. Uijt Jappan werdt geschreven dat de Fluijt Campen op het noordt eijnde van Formosa een legger (*) Battaviasche arack in zee hebben gevischt, desgelijck eenige cruijshouten meteen combaers sien drijven, waar door vermoeden het van d^o Jacht moet wesen dat (godt betert) twee daagen naar desselfs vertreck van dese rede de selfde storm heeft gerescontreert als wanneer de fluijt de Trouw op 't noorderrif quam te stooten ende masteloos raeckte, insgelijcx 't galjoot Ilha Formosa verdreeff en in Pehoe quam te stranden, oock onse cleene lootsboot van ondert Fort 't Canaal uijtdreeff en omtrent Lackemoij is comen te verongelucken; doch het vreemste, dat schier ons onmogelijck schijnt, is dat daarvan geen tijdinge hebben vernomen want soo het op de Formosaansche custe ofte aan't noordt eijnde van Pehouw was comen te verongelucken, ongetwijfelt wij souden daarvan contschap becomen hebben, zulcx dat niet weten wat hier van sullen presumeeren. Wij willen echter het beste verhoopen ende godt bidden dat gem^te Sperwer noch mach comen op te donderen. ....

Dit dus verre geschreven zijnde, comt op den 16^en courant des naar middachs te halff tween de schipper vant Witte Paart Cornelis Lucesar.... de gemelde vrunden soo vande Gecroonde Liefde als Paert verclaaren geduerende haere reijse seer quaat weder hebben gehadt ende dat het niet vreemt zoude wesen dat gemelte Jacht lichtelijck de cust van China zal aangedaan ende aldaar reede gesocht hebben ofte anders presumeeren dat bij-gehouden heeft. Wat hier van zij is den Almogende bekent ende willen t beste hoopen. (Miss. Gouverneur en Raad van Taiwan aan de Bat, Reg. dd^o 17 november 1653).

..... to all our regret, neither the flute the Smient nor the beautiful Jacht the Sperwer didn't appear there [Japan], which was sent to Jappan on last 29th of July with a cargo of f 388819: 14: 15, that is certainly for the Company to [two?] big blows, mainly the missing of so many faithful servants as two such precious ships ... What accident the Sperwer may have treated and cannot comprehend; also didn't receive any message from it. From Jappan is being written that the Flute Campen on the North end of Formosa has fished a legger (*) with Battavian arack [kind of Indonesian liquor] from the sea, as well having seen some cross beams with a warped beam, wherefore suspect that is had to be from ditto Jacht that (God may forbid) two days after the same'ds departure of this roadstead met the same storm as when the flute the Trouw jolted on the northern reef and lost its mast, likewise the galliot was driven from Ilha Formosa and came to strand at Pehoe, also our small pilot boat drove from the fort, out of the Channel and perished around Lackemoij; though the strangest [thing is] that we have received no message, since if it came to perish on the coast of Formosa or on the north end of Pehouw, we should have received without any doubt, notification, such not knowing what to presume. We want however, hope for the best, pray the Lord that mentioned Sperwer comes back from Hell [Probably a writing error, but I can't translate it differently as it is written now]......

This thus far having written, comes on the 16th current after the afternoon at half past one the skipper Cornelis Lucesar from the Witte Paart ... the mentioned friends from both the Gecroonde Liefde as Paert declare that they had very bad weather during their voyage and that it wouldn't be strange that mentioned Jacht lightly called at the coast of China and already have sought there and otherwise presume that has kept up [meant is: perished].
