General Missive January 6, 1628

"Until in the month of June 162[7] the Chinese didn't want to condone that any of our ships or junks to Taijouan harbored in the river of Chincheo [Amoy] or any other place on their Coast; yet thus afterwards the Chinese robbers became that mighty and powerful that sufficient are master of the Chinese sea and destroyed and burned most all the junks on the wholly Coast, also do at land, big destruction and robbery, being estimated to be around 400 junks and 60 to 70 thousand men. The Lieutenant of them, called Icquan, having been the interpreter of the Company in Teijouhan and silently left from there, has given himself to robbery and got in a short time such big following, that the Regents of China did not know what to do, to get the robbers off their Coast ..... The robber Icquan has also had for a long time correspondence with the ours [=our peopele] and gave us reasonable respect, but has eventually without distinction taken all what could get."
