We have had before us, seven person of those who, in the year 1653 with the Sperwer in Corea shipwreck suffered and themselves there ashore have salvaged, besides the time of thirteen years and 28 days like prisoners having been there, or as long having been detained, also questioned them about the situation there and about the trade which might have been there, and read furthermore the verbatim report that they thereupon handed over to us . And while we noticed that the Japanese have their trade and lodge there, and the same country also draws Pepper, Sapwood, Sandalwood, Deer- and Ray skins, as well as such goods which we bring to the market in Japan and, among which is meant the Dutch [written is: the here lands] cloth [or linen], as well as being a cold country, also might as well be the most important, we have taken into consideration, if it wouldn't be good and helpful, that a shipment would be send thither, amongst other under the pretence for the remaining prisoners or detained still being there, to support if we wouldn't be permitted to the trade there, presenting the previously mentioned folks with the travel and shipment in service of the Company to enter again [into the country], like they reported us, that the eighth being the bookkeeper (*), joined them in Batavia. According to the previous mentioned report, would those of Corea make their trade also into the country of Pekin, to which many of the goods, which in case of admission, could be obtained by us there, might be transported and charged, then that the most important obstacle we might meet therein, should be that those of Corea, being tributaries of the Great Tartar, who sends annually his Commissioners there, to be informed about all kinds of things, from our representative there understanding, easily the same would seek to resist and to discourage, especially since the same resists to let us trade in his realm; But also the Noble Pieter van Hoorn could easily inquire Your Nobleness further, your Nobleness should be able to do and decide, in and around [=concerning] that shipment, as Your Nobleness should mean to be the most beneficial and advantageous to the Company.
