traitté de l' invasion des Tartares" (Relation du Naufrage d'un vaisseau holandois sur la Coste de l' Isle de Quelpaerts etc. Avertissement au Lecteur).--"The book, which contains... a racy description of the country and people, deserves careful study. It throws some interesting sidelights on the history of the "Coresians" two and a half centuries ago, then as always between the upper and nether mill-stones of the "Japoneses" and the "Chineses" to north and south of them" (Foreword van M. N. Trollope bij de uitgave van Hamel's Journaal in Transactions Corea Branch R. A. S. IX, 1918, bl. 93-94).

[104] "The French translater indulges in skepticism concerning Hamel's narrative, questioning especially his geographical statements. Before a map of Corea, with the native sounds even but approximated, it will be seen that Hamel's story is a piece of downright unembroidered truth. It is indeed to be regretted that this actual observer of Corean life, people, and customs gave us so little information concerning them" (Griffis, Corea, 1905, bl. 176).--"Mit Hülfe unserer japanischen Karte von Korai (Atlas No. 6) konnten wir die Reiseroute, der Hamel gefolgt is, nachweisen und die meisten verstümmelten Ortsnamen, deren er in seinem Tagebuche erwähnt, entziffern" (v. Siebold, Geschichte Entd. Japan, bl. 37).

[105] "Like the Japanese, and all the nations of eastern Asia, the Coreans have always bowed down before the greatly superior mental power of the Chinese; and have borrowed from them some of their customs, more of their words, and, perhaps, all the principal books in use between the Yaloo and the western shores of the Pacific" (Ross, History of Corea, bl. 300).--"Whatever note-worthy knowledge the Japanese and other nations possess, they obtained from China, while she has always been self-contained" (Ross, the Manchus (1891) bl. XV). Vgl. J. S. Gale, The influence of China upon Korea (Transactions Korea Branch R. A. S. I, bl. 1-24) en H. B. Hulbert, Korean Survivals (Id. bl. 25-50).
